Sermons on Colossians (Page 3)
The Gravity of Christ
Col 1:1-2
Despite completing yet another pass around the Sun, the world in 2021 felt more off-center than ever. Maybe we’re ready to get off this ride — or maybe we need to recenter ourselves, to recenter the parts of our lives around something immovable, unshakeable, and unchangeable? And maybe — no, definitely — the Bible has the center of gravity we need to pull the pieces of our lives together. Join us on the first Sunday of 2022 as we begin a new series in the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Colossians!
Like Walking Trees
Col 2:6-7 Like Walking Trees
Once a person comes to faith, how does one continue to live and grow in faith? This Sunday we have a guest speaker who will share on this key idea for the spiritual life from the book of Colossians. Bruce Hindmarsh is the professor of Spiritual Theology at Regent College in Vancouver, BC, and his main area of research is Evangelical Spirituality. Bruce and his wife, Carolyn, have been with the staff for a retreat this week. We have been so blessed by his time with us and are thrilled he will be speaking this Sunday.
Christ and Salvation
Col 1:15-20 God was pleased to have all His fulness dwell in this baby in the manger! When God took on human form in the person of Jesus, everything changed forever, beginning with God making peace with humanity. This is the culmination of God’s saving plan – it’s amazing, it’s exciting, and it’s definitely worth celebrating!! Our Family-Friendly Celebration will include a play put on by our youth ministries, a short message wrapping up our Advent series, and, of course, many of your favorite Christmas songs.
Christ and New Creation
Col 1:15-20 Your desire for God and your capacity to connect with God as a human soul is the essence of who you are. And the place where that desire is met is in a person who makes visible and tangible the invisible and intangible God. God becomes human flesh in Jesus. “The Incarnation brings the world (God’s) presence. It is a presence so complete that it overshadows every presence before it.” (Carlos Caretto). If God isn’t like Jesus, he ought to be.
Christ and Creation
Col 1:15-20 This baby in the manger is the –
image of the invisible God
firstborn of all creation
creator of all things
the goal of all things
before all things
and in him, all things hold together.
It takes your breath away, but that’s
the magnificence of the incarnation!
Life in the Spirit
Col 1:15-20 The apostles never grew tired “reminding” their hearers of the essential truths of the gospel that they held dear. To be reminded of the “essential” values of our faith helps us keep the “main thing” the “main thing,” lest we drift, which is so easy to do. It is also helpful to articulate our particular distinctives as a local church to help you connect, serve and worship. During the month of September we will expounding on the values we hold dear at PBCC. The goal is to give us roots and wings, but as the poet Juan Ramón Jiménez writes, “let the wings take root and the roots fly.”
