What is your picture of God? Before yesterday’s sermon, if you didn’t know where Jesus, God with us, began his public ministry, where would you have imagined him showing up first?
It is generally agreed that the first few chapters of John happen before Mark 1:14. In other words, Jesus really does enter the public scene first at the wedding at Cana. The curtains are drawn back, and we see the living God at a wedding, enjoying himself, enjoying the company, bringing abundance and having fun.
It tells me the living God is not a party pooper. It seems he wants us to enjoy the blessings of his good earth and the blessings of being human. We all know there are limits, but the wedding at Cana is a picture of a God who is good and who is for us. As E. Stanley Jones once said, “We live within God’s smile, not his frown.”
This I know, that God is for me. (Ps 56:9)
