I love backpacking around Lake Tahoe, especially in the Desolation Wilderness where this picture was taken (Aloha Lake). I love this picture because it reminds me that God is our rock. He is an unchanging, solid foundation with a proven track-record. As he was faithful in the past, so he will be faithful today and on into the future. “He is the rock eternal.”
This is one thing I’m learning by studying the Gospel of John. Jesus is revealing to us who God really is. And, one of the biggest revelations is that he is the unchanging Truth. To the woman at the well, Jesus opens the woman’s eyes to him being the “I AM,” the one she is to now worship. Later in John, Jesus reveals that he is the “way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).
The Truth is a person, and what captures our attention with the woman at the well is his grace, mercy, compassion and acceptance of her. Jesus reveals God not just as cold, hard facts, but as a God full of grace. She was at rock-bottom and found that he was the rock at the bottom. Here, right before her eyes, was the living God “full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).
For me, that is the kind of rock I want to stand on, especially in uncertain and unstable times like these. “All other ground is sinking sand.”
Grace and peace to you this week, Shawn
